Khukuri Maintenance Guide

To ensure your Khukuri remains in excellent condition over time, regular maintenance of both the blade and scabbard is essential.

🛢️ Blade Care & Lubrication

  • Khukuri blades are often made of high-carbon steel, which is strong but rust-prone.

  • Wipe the blade clean after each use — moisture, sweat, and fingerprints can cause corrosion.

  • Apply a light coat of oil (machine oil, mineral oil, or mustard oil) after cleaning to protect the surface.

  • For long-term storage, use petroleum jelly or wax for added protection.

🧼 Cleaning Rust

If you notice rust:

  1. Use fine sandpaper or steel wool to gently rub the rusted area.

  2. Clean the blade with petrol or thinner to remove residues.

  3. Wipe dry, then oil the blade thoroughly.

🗡️ Sharpening the Blade

  • Use a chakmak (the blunt tool that comes with the Khukuri) or a whetstone.

  • Maintain a 20–25° angle while sharpening.

  • Sharpen only when necessary to extend the life of the blade.

🪵 Scabbard Care

  • Most scabbards are made of wood wrapped in leather.

  • Keep it dry — moisture causes the leather to crack and shrink.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, as prolonged heat can shrink the leather and distort the fit.

  • Use leather conditioner or polish to keep the scabbard supple and clean.

📦 Storage Tips

  • Store your Khukuri in a cool, dry place.

  • Do not leave the blade inside the scabbard for extended periods in humid conditions.

  • For long-term storage, wrap the blade in oiled paper or cloth.
